  1.                     SPELLING -- A Spelling Tutorial Program

  6.     SPELLING is a spelling tutorial package designed for high school and
  7. college students, or any adult learner who wants practice with spelling rules
  8. and skills.  It was originally designed to be used in a university computer
  9. writing lab; this freeware version differs only in title from the original.    
  10. The program is menu-driven and self-explanatory.  To run, simply enter the
  11. command "SPELLING" at the DOS prompt.  (SPELLING should run on any IBM-
  12. compatible machine, and will run on the PCJr.)
  13.     SPELLING contains three sub-programs.  The first, "SPELL," provides
  14. detailed rules, examples, and exercises illustrating the major principles
  15. governing English spelling.  The second, "QUICKSPELL," is a tachistoscope
  16. program that uses a list of the most frequently misspelled English words. 
  17. Finally, "ANAGRAMS" is the classic scrambled-word game, also drawing upon the
  18. list of commonly misspelled words.  Whether used in sequence or ad lib, these
  19. three programs will reinforce your grasp of spelling regularities, your visual
  20. memory of correctly spelled words, and your ability quickly to recognize
  21. misspelled words.

  24. received it on disk, you should have the following files:

  42.     IMPORTANT!!  The program checks for the existence of several of these files
  43. and WILL NOT RUN if they are missing.  If you get a "file missing" message
  44. after the opening screen, you have either deleted a crucial file or downloaded
  45. a defective copy.
  46.     NOTE: SPELLING creates additional .TXT files as it runs.  If you have
  47. downloaded a version that contains additional .TXT files, do not worry; they
  48. are okay, and they will be rewritten as you run the program.
  49.     The ANAGRAMS program keeps an encoded record of the high score in the file
  50. ANAGRAM.DAT.  If this file has been modified you can reset it to 0 using the
  51. command:
  52.             DEBUG ANAGRAM.DAT < ANAGRAM.SCR

  54.     This program is supplied as is; I do not plan to upgrade it in the future. 
  55. It may be freely copied and distributed so long as it is not modified in any
  56. way (this includes the accompanying .TXT files!), and so long as no charges are
  57. made for the program beyond a nominal fee for shipping and computer media.
